And if you are seriously competing for them, there will be wasted resources in that competition.Local metas really change this game, we play quickish, but not as quick as your group does, and we played against people who take their time building elaborate engines and take ages. For example, Building 3 cities with standard projects to get the 5vp, is 75 credits you could have spent on a lot of other things.You can only claim 3 milestones as well, for a total of 15vp across all players. As its about how much the card will give you over the life off the game, and the closer the game end, the more diminished the points are.Milestones are great an all, and 5vp is big, but if you forgo building your engine to throw money at standard projects to get those VPs, I can see the ROI being lower than if you sunk that money into your engine. The amount of production time reduces as well.

They understood the game very quickly (I had Venus+Elysium or Hellas as board), and we finished the game in 8-9 generations (the mythical number 7 I threw around earlier is something we only reach if multiple people are terraforming fast, and at least one guy has good heat production, and another plants, or rather multiple people have plants). On Xmas I played the game with my GF's family, whom are very experienced board gamers. Also if we are terraforming mars quicker than they are used to, then they wont have time to do their comboes, as you said.One of the reasons why I consider fast TM right TM is that from my experience all the stronger players in my groups play the game quick pretty much from get go, while weaker ones play it slower(/or faster if their corp and cards make it so). Thing is we try to read how long the game is, and from experience we are pretty good at that (although if the people from slow meta don't act like we assume estimates can throw a bit).

Terraforming is pretty much the best way to get points as you also get money production at the same time. On elysium though majority of players will TR as the award is pretty much guaranteed to be picked by someone. For us everyone always does at least some terraforming, but generally there are couple who focus on it.

Oceans are the wierdest, as their speed relies heavily on whether those cards have been drawn yet, but you can always standard project them to board.The two biggest points I can add are don't waste money keeping cards early in the game that you simply cannot put into play for several turns and plan out your greenhouse/city placement early. Especially if you TR rush with events you can then use all that money income from TR to buy cities and forests. And then forests come naturally as people start to buy cities.

Typically, I'll focus on steel or titanium income with my opening hand if possible (we play draft pick and I'd recommend everyone does). Focus on getting your income up instead. Odds are, the state of the game (The board, your hand, your current goal) will change over the course of several rounds so wasting money on a dead card is not advisable, particularly early gsme when every coin matters.

Or go hard on energy, or switch to plants. You can hold some jovians, then if you draw a jovian counter card, or two, then you start playing them. Everyone also knows exactly what you're doing and which cards help you (so if you're drafting you're super screwed).Having a lot of cards gives you flexibility mid game to pivot to projects that help your strongest cards. But if you stop drawing cards that have synergy with your strategy, then you're screwed. What's happened though, is that it locks you in to certain strategies. I sued to go very thin on buying cards, even to the point, the last one or two turns i start the generation with like 2 cards before i buy.

The other guys, if people get better at efficiency, will still win more because he has options to change course during the game, and he's probably winning because of decision making, which is a lot harder to learn than efficiencyI don't think there are any 'best strategies', per se, just good principles:Start building an economic base, be it through economic cards or terraforming. You'll then see your win % drop. As players get better and better, and if everyone is efficient, then it'll be about who draws the cards their strategy needs to win.
